 Shakira Mebarak Rill (/S@’kI@r@/ sh@–KEER-@; Spanish: [(t?)Sa'kira]; was born on February 2 1977) is a Colombian artist and singer. Born in Barranquilla She has been called the "Queen of Latin Music"and is noted for her versatility musically. She made her recording debut with Sony Music Colombia at the age of 13. Following the failure of commercial success with the first two albums she released, Magia (1991), and Peligro (1993) Her popularity in Hispanic countries increased thanks to her following albums Pies Descalzos (1995), and Donde Estan los Ladrones? (1998). The singer entered the market in English with her fifth album, Laundry Service (2001), that sold more than 13 million copies around the world. Buoyed by the international popularity of her singles "Whenever, Wherever" as well as "Underneath Your Clothes", Laundry Service helped establish her status as a leading crossover artist. Broadcast Music, Inc. described Shakira as a "pioneer" that extended the audience of Latino singers worldwide.
