Jonathan (hatched c. 1832) is a Seychelles giant tortoise (Aldabrachelys gigantea hololissa) which is a subspecies belonging to the Aldabra giant tortoise (Aldabrachelys gigantea) and is the oldest known living land animal. Jonathan lives on Saint Helena, an British Overseas Territory located in the South Atlantic Ocean. He was born in 1832, and brought with him three tortoises that were all about 50 years old from Seychelles. He was named in the 1930s by the Governor of Saint Helena Sir Spencer Davis and has been through 31 governors' terms. He continues to live on the grounds of Plantation House, the official residence of the governor. He is looked after by the Saint Helena. His age was estimated since he was "fully mature" when he was brought to Saint Helena in 1882. The term "fully mature" means "fully mature" in the event that he's at or above 50 years old age. This would give him an 1832 hatching date. [8] A photograph featuring Jonathan originally thought to date to 1902 is actually from 1886. It shows Jonathan just four years old when he arrived on Saint Helena. The measurements taken from the photo confirm that he was fully mature in 1886.
