Joseph William Namath (/'neIm@th/; NAY-meth; born May 31, 1943) is an ex- American football quarterback who played in the American Football League (AFL) as well as the National Football League (NFL) for 13 seasons, mostly with the New York Jets. He was a college football player at Alabama. As a senior, he won the national championship and was selected by the Jets as the number one overall selection during the 1965 AFL Draft. During the course of his five AFL seasons He was a two-time MVP and twice led the league in passing yards. He also helped lead the Jets to win an AFL championship as well as a Super Bowl. Both victories remain the Jets only championships. After the merger of the AFL and NFL in 1970, Namath joined the NFL with the Jets, where he was the league's passing yards and touchdowns most prolific in 1972. Namath was in New York for seven more years, with his final year being spent with the Los Angeles Rams. In 1969, Namath made his mark by ensuring that his underdog Jets won Super Bowl III. Then Namath defeated the NFL's Baltimore Colts in one the most famous sports shocks.
