Lion

Disney has released figures to celebrate more than 20 years of The Lion King, confirming that it's the top-earning stage title in box-office history at $9.1 Billion (yes, that's a billion). Add the movies and the total is $11.6 billion, the largest ever for a stage and screen title. This figure for theaters - released on October 28 to mark 20 years since the premiere of the production in London's West End and upcoming 22nd anniversary on Broadway in New York - only does not reflect the main two films' gross. There is also ancillary income such as TV shows, merchandize, video games, DVD, VHS, Blu-Ray and album soundtrack sales. Two years ago, the House of Mouse picked Julie Taymor as the director to adapt the tale. Although she is best known for her Shakespeare direction, she also designed stunning staging and costumes. The crowd at the London anniversary gala in the week of this week (in aid of the Elton John AIDS Foundation and the Royal Academy of Music) enjoyed the evergreen story about the evolution of Simba from a cub with wide eyes to his destined role as the King of the Pridelands in the Serengeti Plains.
