She attended Stoiunina Gymnasium, where she began writing at the age of eight. As her parents attempted to protect her from the turmoil in politics that was raging in the time, Alisa developed her own views and preferred a republican government to the monarchy of the constitution. Rand at the age of nine years old, made the decision to become an author, especially inspired by Victor Hugo's novels. Thus when the 'February Revolution' erupted in Saint Petersburg in 1917, the twelve-year-old Alisa favored Alexander Kerensky over Tsar Nicholas II. The family's life was interrupted by the 'October Revolution" started at the end of the year. As the Bolsheviks took over power, her father's company was taken over and they had to flee to the Crimea in order to begin afresh.
